Day 19-20/63, 2 more days in the Rhine Valley in Boppard Germany

On what we thought was our last day in Boppard, we had a leisurely morning, packed up, and checked out of our Airbnb. We headed to the Boppard train station hoping to find an Uber or taxi to take us up to Oberwesel and Schönburg Castle, where we had one night booked. The only other transportation option was the train and a 1 km uphill walk to the castle. Luckily, a couple of taxis were waiting at the station. Seventy euros later, we arrived at Schönburg Castle.

This is when we discovered our silly mistake. We had checked out of the Boppard Airbnb a day early. Both of us had looked at our long two‑month itinerary that morning and somehow missed the detail that we were supposed to stay in Boppard until Friday. We didn’t realize the mistake until I tried to check us in at the castle and they couldn’t find our reservation. Panic set in for a moment, thinking I had booked the wrong day. The owner eventually found it — for Friday night, not Thursday. That’s when the mistake became clear.

Luckily, a room in the castle was available, so two nights in a castle it was. And what a room it was — a 270‑degree view overlooking the vineyards and the Rhine River.

With the extra day and night at the castle, we had time to relax, have some lunch, and explore.

The next day we had a leisurely morning with breakfast and a visit to the castle museum in one of the old towers. Then we set out for a walk into Oberwesel to explore the old town wall built between 1220 and 1250. It is the best‑preserved medieval wall in the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Gorge. We had heard there was a wine festival in town, but unfortunately, it didn’t start until 6 p.m.

We found a small bistro for lunch and sat at a table with a couple who live about ninety minutes from Oberwesel and were vacationing in their small RV. We had a lovely conversation with Michelle and Marko over lunch, covering everything from family to German and US politics.
